全球奖金最高的历史著作奖“坎迪尔奖”揭晓

第10届“麦吉尔大学坎迪尔历史奖（The Cundill History Prize of McGill）”（以下简称“坎迪尔奖”）于当地时间11月16日21点30分（北京时间11月17日10点30分）在加拿大东部城市蒙特利尔揭晓。丹尼尔·比尔（Daniel Beer）的《死者之屋：沙皇统治下的西伯利亚流放》（The House of the Dead: Siberian Exile under the Tsars）拔得头筹，荣获本次评选的大奖（Grand Prize），赢得奖金75000美元（约合人民币49.9万元）。同时入围决赛的另两部作品——克里斯多夫·戈查（Christopher Goscha）的《新越南史》（Vietnam: A New History）和沃特·沙依斗（Walter Scheidel）的《大调平器：从石器时期到二十一世纪的暴力与不平等历史》（The Great Leveler: Violence and the History of Inequality from the Stone Age to the Twenty-first Century）获得优秀奖（Recognition of Excellence Prizes），每位作者获奖金10000美元（约合人民币6.7万元）。

加拿大麦吉尔大学

本次大奖得主丹尼尔・比尔是英国伦敦大学皇家霍洛威学院历史系高级讲师（相当于北美大学体制的副教授），专长于俄国现代史。这次获奖的《死者之屋》，书名的灵感来自于俄国小说家陀思妥耶夫斯基的《死屋手记》。依作者之见，这是最早书写西伯利亚政治流放犯的作品之一。丹尼尔・比尔运用藏于莫斯科、圣彼得堡以及西伯利亚城市的大批珍贵档案，细述从十九世纪初至俄国十月革命爆发期间西伯利亚如何转变成令俄国人民闻之丧胆的流放地——一座“没有天花板的巨大监狱”。在这百年间，沙皇政府流放了超过一百万名的囚犯及其家属，起初只针对重犯，接着小偷、妓女、乞丐等都被送往西伯利亚，最后政治异议分子也遭放逐。本书生动再现了流放西伯利亚这个不人道刑罚体制的残酷现实、流放者的悲惨命运，以及西伯利亚流放体制的成败如何牵动帝俄政局。

优秀奖得主克里斯多夫·戈查是加拿大魁北克大学蒙特利尔分校历史系教授。教学范围包括国际关系、全球史、殖民与后殖民时期的印度支那史、去殖民化与印度支那战争等。他的《新越南史》刚刚在今年十月荣获由美国历史学会（American Historical Association）评选的本年度费正清奖（The John K. Fairbank Prize）。在这部五百多页的著作中，克里斯多夫·戈查强调“复数越南”的概念。今日越南境内拥有五十个以上的族群，使用六种以上的不同语言。如此之大的差异是数世纪以来与周遭政权冲突、融合的结果。他带领读者纵览了越南从百越时期直到当代的历史，仔细梳理不同帝国主义势力的运作——不仅涉及中国、美国与日本，也涉及从红河流域逐步往南扩张的越南本身——并检视这些势力如何塑造了越南及其文化。

另一位优秀奖得主沃特·沙依斗是美国斯坦福大学古典学教授。研究兴趣包括古代社会史、经济史、前现代历史人口学等。近年来，他也主编多本古代罗马帝国与秦汉中国的比较史论文集。在本次获奖的《大调平器》中，透过研究数千年人类社会不平等的历史，沃特·沙依斗发现几乎没有以和平手段解决经济不平等问题的例子，唯有暴力才扮演真正关键的角色。他指出，特别是“调平四骑士”（源自于新约圣经《启示录》中的四骑士，在世界毁灭之际，会将瘟疫、战争、饥荒与死亡带给接受最后审判的人类）、“总动员战争”、“彻底革命”、“政府垮台”，以及“致命传染病”真正发挥“调平”的作用，缓解贫富差距。

以全球奖金最高的历史著作奖著称的“坎迪尔奖”由麦吉尔大学校友皮特·坎迪尔（F. Peter Cundill, 1938–2011）于2008年创立，以表彰在历史研究和写作上具有突出贡献的学术著作。该奖项开放给上一年度和本年度以英文出版的历史专著，同时欢迎英文译著参选。“坎迪尔奖”组委会由麦吉尔大学人文学院的院长（Dean of Arts）牵头，每年在全世界范围内邀请4-5名学者专家组成一个评委会（Jury），从各大出版社选送的著作中先遴选出入围名单（longlist），再从中推选出三部著作进入终选环节（finalists）。值得一提的是，“坎迪尔奖”的评选，不仅强调历史著作的人文影响和学术规范，而且还看中作者的文字表现力和生动性。因此，评委会的成员既有来自高校的教授学者，也有来自知名媒体的主编和专栏作家。以今年的评委会为例，5位成员有牛津大学、多伦多大学、伦敦玛丽皇后大学的教授，还有《华尔街日报》（The Wall Street Journal）与《环球邮报》（The Globe and Mail）的专栏作家和记者。而往年曾担任过评委会成员的历史学者卜正民（Timothy Brook, 2016）、娜塔莉·泽蒙·戴维斯（Natalie Zemon Davis, 2008）和罗杰·夏蒂埃（Roger Chartier, 2008）也是以其研究著作的可读性，在读者中具有很大影响力。

作为“坎迪尔奖”年度盛会的一个重要环节，上一年度荣获大奖的作者会受邀在麦吉尔大学进行公开演讲。今年出席的演讲嘉宾是加州大学伯克利分校历史系教授托马斯·拉科尔（Thomas W. Laqueur），演讲题为《人们何以在乎已逝之躯——从旧石器时代延续至今》（Why We Have Cared for the Dead Body: From the Paleolithic to the Present and in Between），围绕着其去年的获奖著作《逝者之作》（The Work of the Dead）展开。本书通过分析大量不同年代、类型材料，包括考古遗迹、医学手册、书信、以及艺术作品等，生动详实地呈现了从古至今，生者如何以及为何在意逝者。讲座在最终获奖结果揭晓的前一天举行，免费向公众开放，会后设有招待酒会，供演讲者与听众做更进一步的交流。
