钱锺书

《钱锺书手稿集》中《容安馆札记》和《中文笔记》的错简,前已指正(《中华读书报》2004年2月11日、《上海书评》2012年4月22日又11月18日),《外文笔记》安容独外?

假使把“按时排序”的编辑体例当真,那末全集的序列从头到尾没有对的——本与本的衔接只偶尔不错。钱先生明白标识的过接词“to be continued”,“à suivre”,“Fortsetzung folgt”(未毕),“concluded”,“Fortsetzung”(已毕),编者度外恝置。

(California: A Study of American Character;my deepest motives and problems have centered about the Idea of the Community)。

第三册第270页应移植于第271页后(Les demi-vierges)。

第四册第432页应移植于第434页后(Reflections on Our Age;it is only some among the many possible developments of human history that are considered to be progressive),空白页应剔除。431页前有脱叶,下面为Revue d’Histoire Littéraire de la France1958年第1期的补抄,编者误属作Pull Devil Pull Baker

第六册第569-574页应移植于第718页后(A Modern English Grammar)。钱先生摘录A Modern English Grammar时已自编页码。

第六册第638-639页应移植于第568页后(A Modern English Grammar)。

第六册第646页应移植于第647页后(A Modern English Grammar;there is no answer)。

第十八册第503-505页、第515-516页、第519-522页三处同为Frank Swinnerton的The Georgian Scene: A Literary Panorama札记;第519-522页最前,为原书的第193-361页,第515-516页为原书的第374-414页,第503-505页为原书的第414页至末(钱先生赞曰:“Sane and salutary and outspoken criticism, interspersed with personal reminiscences, be produced from ‘London Bookman’.”)。The Georgian Scene: A Literary Panorama札记的前半部存在于第19册第28-34页。第519-522页移植于第515-516页前,复移植于第503页前,然后一并移植于第19册第34页后,庶几理顺章成。又按此本(No. 106)为编者蛮狠合成,手踪迥异,望而知非一时之作。其中第503-526页、第607-670页原为活叶,作于1935年。第527-606页为1953年的笔记,自成一本,第527-528页的Sir John Suckling, Poems (addenda to infra)为首叶,作于三十年后,补第592页的The Works of Sir John Suckling (Sir John Suckling, Poems, Taworth Press, 1933, see first page)。

第十九册第87页为第182页的赘出,宜替换以第89页。

第二十一册第614页应移植于第849页后(English Opinions of French Poetry)。

第二十一册第642页应移植于第640页后(The Poetics)。

第二十一册第670页应移植于第668页后(A Grammar of Assent)。

第二十一册第671-672页应移植于第669页后(Pleasures and Speculations)。

第二十一册第676-677页应移植于第6册第712页后(A Modern English Grammar;the ideas present themselves to the mind of the speaker)。

第二十一册第680-681页应移植于第6册第700页后(A Modern English Grammar;a generaling pl. without any article)。

第二十一册第682-683页应移植于第6册第704页后(A Modern English Grammar;of all melancholy topics, what is the most melancholy)。又按叶眉的“The Perfumed Garden of Cheikh Nefzaoui”(原讹作Nefzaoni)的标题不用说是瞎编的。目录错漏,何啻千数。而“Title Index”居然以冠词作首字,尤荒谬绝伦。

第二十一册第686-687页应移植于第六册第695页前(A Modern English Grammar;I have other fish to fry)。上文Greek Art and Literature(第684-686页)亦宜一并移植。

第二十一册第690-691页应移植于第六册第554页后(A Modern English Grammar; after verbs like produce, create, beget, construct, manufacture, etc.)。又按钱先生1952年选录A Modern English Grammar,笔墨纸全一样,却给编者二分四散,一划入“1938-1949”末的No. 39,一属于“1949-1972”末的No. 121,远隔得彼此要害相思病——疑两者本为一体。我浮山越海使之团聚,有良心的人都得感谢。钱先生在抄A Modern English Grammar的间歇,穿插几种札记和Jottings,并打上框框,如第6册第715页的The Star of Satan,编者全看不见。

第二十一册第751页应移植于第755页后(Essays and Addresses)。

第二十一册第769页应移植于第778页后(Specimens of Douglas Jerrold’s Wit)。

第二十一册第777页应移植于第768页前(The Jest Book)。

第二十一册第811-812页应移植于第808页后(A Modern Book of Esthetics;dominant character or idée mère (Taine, Philosophie de l’art))。

第二十一册第837-843页阑入1978年版Lazarillo de Tormes. Vida del Buscon don Pablos摘记(编者竟割裂Lazarillo de Tormes作作者名)。

第二十一册第847页应移植于第612页后(Socratic Method and Critical Philosophy。写入《容安馆日札》第七十四、二百三十三、四百八十九则)。除此横梗板障,则第846页与第848页通家好合矣(English Opinions of French Poetry;on three Unities in Preface and Prologue to Secret Love)。

第三十二册第37-41页应移植于第33页后(The Theory of Good and Evil;but when circumstances make it impossible for me to secure for myself)。编者不肯出力为钱家做事,还嘴硬道:“这是土掘坑里钻出来的,没有老娘”(excerpt without author or title)。

第三十二册第54页应移植于第52页后(Studies of English Poets;the vitality of a translation is necessarily limited)。

第三十二册第283页应移植于第284页后(Diderot as a Disciple of English Thought;who will support it)。此节见用于日札第一百四十九则。

第三十二册第383页应移植于第384页后(France;Proviseur the head of the lycée)。“Back”之注亦误。

第三十二册第543页应移植于第544页后(Patmore: A Study in Poetry)。

第三十三册第552页应移植于第550页前(Walpoliana;books that one takes up in the gout, low spirits, ennui, or when one is waiting for company)。日札第一百四十七则引之。

第三十四册第546页应移植于第545页前(Psychology Down the Ages;it was opposed to subjectum)。日札第五百四十四则用之。

第三十五册第477-487页应移植于第497页后(Les grands écrivains français;car on peut dire en passant que c’est presque toujours aux grands hommes en tout genre que l’on doit les grands maux et les grandes erreurs)。多为日札援据。

第三十五册第551-561页应移植于第527页后(Fashion in Literature;free himself from the bonds of time and place is to consider not so much taste itself as tastes)。日札第二百二十七则为Kellett此书作,赞以“思精语隽”,他处亦多采及。

第三十六册第5-10页应移植于第250页后(The Life of Sir Richard Burton;after European fashion, the laugh, which they look upon as undignified)。

第三十六册第24页应移植于第25页后(Authors Today and Yesterday)。

第三十六册第83-84页应移植于第81页后(Curiosités esthétiques;le pauvre homme est tellement américanisé qu’il a perdu la notion des différences entre le monde physique et le monde morale)。

第三十六册第89页应移植于第259页后(Le Diable boiteux)。《小说识小》论《跛足魔鬼》之蓝本也。

第三十六册第211页、第439-448页、第464-465页胥为Library of the World’s Best Literature之札,宜捉置一处,诠次则第445-448页、第439-444页、第464-465页、第211页。

第三十六册第271页应移植于第367页后(Le Théâtre en France;l’attaque est double forcément, quelle que soit la pureté des intentions de l’auteur)。

第三十六册第295页应移植于第305页前(The English Novel;Leigh Hunter, who expresses an enthusiastic admiration for book)。
