Beijing Daxing International Airport Economic Zone has become an important tool for development

Located in the hinterland of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cluster and boasting the comprehensive transportation methods of aviation, highways and railways, Beijing Daxing International Airport is driving the development of the region.

Known as the new gateway of China, it has become an important tool for the country to focus on the future development of world-class urban areas.

Director of the development and reform department at the management committee of the airport economic zone in Daxing district said the airport’s average daily passenger throughput has exceeded 100,000.

The yearly cargo and mail throughput of the airport is expected to reach 4 million metric tons in the next few years.

The economic zone of Daxing airport, with an overall control area of about 1,028 square kilometers and a core area of about 150 sq km, is the only advantageous area in the country that has free trade zone policies of two regions and cities at the same time.

Among them, the Daxing part is 50 sq km, and the Hebei Langfang part is about 100 sq km.

The 50 sq km of Daxing is further divided into two areas: the eastern area of the airport is 24 sq km, with a comprehensive bonded area, an international aviation community, an international convention and exhibition center, an international consumption hub, an international school and a central ecological park.

The western area is 26 sq km, with services such as healthcare, an international talent community, science and technology innovation zone and hospital.

Beijing Daxing International Airport’s advantages are mainly in the high starting point of national strategies and the late-mover advantage in planning and construction.

The urban design of the airport economic zone and the industrial planning to promote its sustainable development are determined with the life and health industry as the lead, high-end services and aviation security as the two basic sectors as well as new-generation information technologies and advanced equipment.

The management committee has also sorted out a list of idea invitations, targeting more than 400 leading companies, promoting the development of two complexes, an international convention and exhibition center and an international consumption hub, and planning four major areas: a comprehensive bonded area, a smart logistics area, an international aviation community, and an international life and health community.

The airport economic zone will build six major industrial parks, including the International Aviation Headquarters Park, the Biomedical Incubator, and the International Business Complex.

Innovative incubation projects such as Aige Stem Cell, Shanghai Cell, and Sino Valley have already landed in the zone’s Innovation Center.

The contracted projects in the life and health fields have started construction, focusing on aviation industry projects such as the Civil Aviation Airworthiness Certification Center.

Within the area of about 100 sq km in Langfang, more than half of the area is used for overall management and control of natural environment such as rivers, corridors, forests and farmland.

“If Beijing Daxing International Airport is a phoenix head, here we are a phoenix body, a wing and a feather,” said deputy director of the management committee of the airport economic zone in Langfang.

He said the goal is to make Langfang area a model of green and high-quality growth in Hebei, a large platform for the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and a world-class aviation city.

From 2019 to 2035, the Langfang part of the Daxing airport economic zone will build 902 construction and public service facilities, with a total investment of about 95 billion yuan($14.5 billion).

Capital seeks global input for economy

Beijing launched a competition to collect ideas all over the world for the International Convention and Exhibition and Consumption Hub in the Beijing Daxing International Airport Economic Zone on Thursday.

Wang Youguo, Party secretary of the city’s Daxing district, said at the news conference that gathering in Beijing can be the first choice of international companies and professionals while investing in Daxing is investing in the future of China and the world.

And the airport economic zone is an innovative hub that helps the city to cooperate with other regions worldwide and become a new impetus for national development.

The zone’s core region covers an area of about 150 square kilometers. Some 50 sq km is in Beijing while the rest is in the city’s neighboring Hebei province.

The conference also announced future functions of the economic zone in an all-around way.

The zone will combine air transportation with railway transportation.

It will also advance cultural development and help to showcase Chinese culture to people from different countries and regions.

It will feature innovation in the airport economy and thus aid industrial development in the economic zone.

The zone aims to become an impressive area with a distinctive image. It also hopes to enable visitors to relax and sightsee.

The area will become a livable area that develops in an environmentally friendly and intelligent way, which makes it competitive.

It desires to promote international contacts and thus become a new area for China’s opening-up.

Its International C&E and Consumption Hub will be developed based on globally creative ideas, Wang said.

The zone will explore a comprehensive development mode integrating a convention and exhibition center, a consumption hub and a park.

The area is a key support for Beijing’s development into a center of global exchange, an international consumption hub and a global tourist destination.

Related government agencies planned expressways, rail lines, and systems of tramcars, bus rapid transit, bicycle lanes and walking for the economic zone in recent years.

Beijing prioritizing airport business to drive growth

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Beijing is revving up efforts to create new landmarks for international consumption based on its dual hub airports. The city views consumption as key to driving the regional economy.

The dual hub airports — Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport — together with their airport economic zones, are key platforms for the circulation of international resources.

They gather a large number of passengers, cargos, information and capital flows.

In the next few years, Beijing will cooperate with civil aviation, airline companies and various freight market players to ensure that international consumption increases the supply of international goods and services.

Data show that the passenger throughput of Beijing Capital International Airport exceeded 100 million in 2019, ranking first in the country and second in the world. There are 93 airlines operating in 293 destinations in 65 countries and regions.

Since Beijing Daxing International Airport opened in 2019, a total of 39 airlines have been stationed in with 256 routes and 178 destinations.

“Building an international consumption center is an important task in introducing well-known market players and creating a strong environment for shopping and consumption. We are building Daxing into an important consumption highland in the

southern part of Beijing,” said Cai Xiaojun, deputy director of Daxing district.

“The growth rate of service consumption in Beijing in the past 10 years has always been faster than that of commodity consumption. Online consumption has continued to accelerate. The airport economic zones should explore new consumption trends and create tailored scenarios for customers to better meet needs,” he said.

Daxing also strives to build a characteristic industrial system in the comprehensive bonded zone at the airport and improve core competitiveness such as international supply chain distribution, high-end consumption display and trading.

The first phase of the bonded zone is operating as scheduled, coordinating the resources of Beijing and Hebei province.
