If we say the movie titled The Landmine Warfare spread the military legend of Haiyang throughout China, the movie titled The New Guard Under Neon Lights made the reputation of the Good Eighth Company on Nanjing Road known to the whole nation. Nevertheless, few people know that the well-known company came from Laiyang.

如果说，电影《地雷战》将海阳的战争传奇传遍了大江南北，那么，《霓虹灯下的哨兵》则让“南京路上好八连”的称号誉享全国。不过，很少有人知道，这支妇孺皆知的连队是从莱阳走出去的。

On Aug.6, 1947, a company mainly composed of young Laiyang natives was created in Xiaoyuan Village in the west of Laiyang City. Based on the first company of the Recruit Training Center, the team was made up by drafting some backbone members from the seventh company of the Special Service Regiment of Shandong Military Region. It was the supply company of the fourth brigade of the Special Service Regiment.

1947年8月6日，在莱阳城西的小园村里，一支主要由莱阳籍青年组成的连队诞生了。这支队伍是以新兵训练处一连为基础，从山东军区特务团七连抽调部分骨干建制而成，是特务团四大队的辎重连。

At that time Laiyang City boasted 1,000-mu pear orchards with trees covering the sky, very convenient for the army to seek cover. Although it was the harvesting season and the orchards were loaded with aromatic pears, the soldiers of the company strictly observed the discipline of “never taking any property from the masses” and actively helped the masses work in their spare time, which became a beautiful story then.

那时的莱阳城，千亩梨园，树木遮天，极有利于队伍的隐蔽。尽管正值秋收，园中挂满了清香扑鼻的大梨，可连队的战士们严守“不拿群众一针一线”的纪律，还在休息时间主动帮群众干活，一时传为美谈。

Later, the supply company followed the major forces to fight for thousands of miles and participated in the well-known Huaihai Campaign, eventually bringing the pure, honest, arduous and simple character of Laiyang people to the metropolis of Shanghai and awarded the honorary title of “the Good Eighth Company on Nanjing Road” by the Ministry of National Defense which lasts till now.

此后，辎重连跟随大部队转战千里，参加了著名的淮海战役，最终将莱阳人民淳厚忠诚、艰苦朴素的品格，带到了十里洋场的大上海，赢得了国防部授予的“南京路上好八连”的光荣称号，传到如今。

Why could Laiyang nurture such a team as the Good Eighty Company? The answer is self-evident. It is because of the profound red culture of Laiyang City, a place teeming with heroes.

为何莱阳能够孕育出“好八连”这样的队伍？答案是显而易见的。因为英豪辈出的莱阳城，有着深厚的红色文化底蕴。

莱阳战役胜利后的庆功门

I still remember that in my early childhood boys often chanted the song of “cutting the heads of the enemy with our broadswords.” The valiant and spirited manner seemed that they would really go to the battlefield. The populous Broadsword March was a vivid footnote of the revolutionary history of Laiyang. By that time, I had already known the reputation of Laiyang of Yantai as the Township of Martial Arts.

记得我小的时候，男孩子们经常哼唱“大刀向鬼子们的头上砍去”的歌曲，那雄赳赳气昂昂的架势，仿佛要真的奔赴沙场，而这一首脍炙人口的《大刀进行曲》便是莱阳革命史的生动注脚。那时候，我就已经知道了烟台莱阳“武术之乡”的大名。
