On the afternoon of November 23, 2023, Beijing time, the Boao Forum for Asia Academy (BFA Academy) held the first Expert Session for the 2024 BFA Flagship Report "Sustainable Development: Asia and the World -- Striding into a Net Zero Electricity Era and Promoting Green Development in Asia." This marked the commencement of the report writing process. Nishant Bhardwaj, GGGI’s head of Green Investment Services and Renewable Energy Lead, FANG Li, Country Director of World Resources Institute China, ZHANG Lin, Director of Development and Planning Department, China Electricity Council, Sean Keenihan, President of the South Australia Branch of the Australia China Business Council, LIU, Dora Minghua, Deloitte China Deputy CEO and Chief Officer of Transformation, and CHEN Ji, Executive Director, head of green economy team at CICC Global Institute (CGI), served as expert advisors guiding the main points and framework of the report. Authors and representatives from the China Electricity Council, the New Development Bank, Deloitte China, were present at the session. CAO Li, Vice President of the BFA Academy, chaired the session.

Experts emphasized the timeliness and significance of the study on the green transition of the Asian power system, which is closely related to the global carbon neutrality process, and to the ecological protection and development. A smooth green transformation of the Asian power sector will also positively affect Asian countries’ global new competitive landscape and ask more for global trade and investment. Attention needs to be paid to both the supply side and the demand side of the power ecosystem. In such a process, Asian countries are encouraged to attract green investment, strengthen technological exchange, and achieve the transition to green energy in an orderly way, considering their own natural endowments and development status.

Under the guidance of experts, the author team conducted in-depth discussions on the report structure and key contents for each chapter. Authors expressed their commitment to pull all efforts cooperatively according to the project timeline. The aim is to fully showcase Asia's achievements in green development and green energy transition, and to propose policy recommendations that are appropriate to the future development of Asia.
