-n-Type Porphyrinoids for Solar Cells. The development of nonfullerene acceptors has become a prominent focus in both organic and perovskite solar cells. In addition to rylene diimides and fused-ring electron acceptors, porphyrinoids are promising acceptors. In this Mini-Review, Jorge Labella, Tomás Torres, and Juan Laforga-Martin summarize the development and current status of porphyrinoids acceptors for use in fullerene-free photovoltaics. While significant progress has been made, there is still great potential in deepening our understanding of n-type porphyrinoids.

-Depolymerization. With increasing concerns about polymer waste management and environmental pollution, there is an urgent need for developing a circular polymer economy. Approaches to recycling involving efficient depolymerization under mild conditions can play an important role in this effort. In this Mini-Review, Bo Qin (秦博) and Xi Zhang (张希) highlight recent advances in depolymerization methodologies with an emphasis on two approaches: (1) depolymerization of commercial polymers to produce monomers and high-value chemicals and (2) depolymerization of intrinsically depolymerizable polymers. The authors discuss future trends, challenges, and opportunities in the realm of depolymerization for the development of a circular polymer economy.

-Polymer Upcycling. Widespread use and low recovery rate of polyolefins have led to significant waste and environmental problems. In this Mini-Review, Fan Zhang (张帆), Zheng Huang (黄正), and coworkers summarize recent advances in catalytic strategies for chemical recycling of polyolefins from two perspectives: (1) employing advanced catalysts or techniques to overcome the challenges in conventional chemical deconstruction approaches and (2) developing novel tandem/cascade catalytic systems for upcycling of polyolefins to value-added products under mild conditions.

-Organic Scintillators. Organic scintillators that efficiently generate bright triplet excitons are of critical importance for high performance X-ray-excited luminescence in radiation detection. However, the nature of triplet-singlet spin-forbidden transitions in these materials often results in long-lived phosphorescence, which is undesirable for ultrafast X-ray detection and imaging. Qiushui Chen (陈秋水), Meijin Lin (林梅金), Huanghao Yang (杨黄浩), and coworkers show that the effect of hybridized local and charge-transfer excited states enables organic scintillators to exhibit highly efficient and fast radioluminescence in response to X-ray irradiation.

-Electroreductive C–C Cross-Coupling. 2-Alkyl cyclic amines are important molecules owing to their prevalence in natural products and their widespread applications in drugs, agrochemicals, functional materials, ligands, and chemosensors. Min Zhang (张珉) and coworkers report an efficient electroreductive α-alkylation of N-heteroarenes with styrenes. Their approach offers a useful platform for direct construction of valuable aryl-fused 2-alkyl cyclic amines that are difficult to access through conventional methods.

-Organic π-bowl Semiconductors. As open substructures of fullerenes, aromatic π-bowls are promising candidates as new organic semiconductors, as well as attractive hosts for fullerenes. Xinyue Liu, Hironobu Hayashi, Guangpeng Gao (高广鹏), Lei Zhang (张磊), and coworkers report the efficient synthesis of a new π-bowl, which represents a subunit of C70 and contains a pentaphene moiety, and its derivatives. Additionally, the π-bowl exhibits p-type transport behavior with a maximum mobility of 2.3 cm2 V−1 s−1, which is the highest value yet observed for organic π-bowl semiconductors.

-Electrochemical Water Splitting. The development of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is one of the most urgent tasks to achieve the large-scale application of hydrogen production from water splitting. Licheng Sun (孙立成) and coworkers present a comprehensive mechanistic study of OER on Ni1−xFexOOH catalysts. A nickel-oxygen radical and an iron-oxo group are identified as two essential intermediates in OER, and both the Ni and Fe sites with low theoretical overpotentials can act as the active sites in the defective Ni1−xFexOOH, providing a rationale to inform future design of more efficient OER catalysts.

-Protein Catenanes. Wen-Bin Zhang (张文彬) and coworkers develop highly efficient peptide–peptide ligation tools by bringing in beneficial mutations to the SpyTag/BDTag/SpyStapler ligation system and repurposing the tools to successfully enable the active template synthesis of higher-order protein catenanes in high yields. Higher-order protein catenation not only leads to enhanced thermal stability and proteolytic resistance but also higher affinity of the nanobody due to multivalent effects.

-Adaptable Polymers. Eutectogels are usually prepared by direct heating or light irradiation of precursors to trigger the in situ polymerization processes in deep eutectic solvents (DESs). However, high-boiling point DESs cannot be simply removed through common drying methods, which can result in eutectogels with poor mechanical properties. You Yu (于游) and coworkers report a synergistic orthogonal photopolymerization and solvent effect strategy to fabricate high-performance adaptable and robust eutectogels. Their strategy opens up new horizons in research on soft, stable, and strong materials and devices.

-Total Synthesis of Lipoteichoic Acids. Lipoteichoic acids (LTAs) represent a group of structurally related macroamphiphiles that are prominent constituents of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. Due to their inherent complexity, accessing LTAs with structural integrity from natural sources for biological or immunological evaluation is challenging. -Three-Dimensional Perovskite Nanoparticles. Rapid halide anion exchange easily occurring in metal-halide perovskite nanoparticles makes it nearly impossible to create single three-dimensional (3D) perovskite nanoparticles that are simultaneously comprised of two separate perovskite components. Youchao Wei (魏游超), Yongsheng Liu (刘永升), Maochun Hong (洪茂椿), and coworkers report a new method for fabricating 3D perovskite through Ni2+-mediated halide anion exchange that displays an intrinsic dual-band excitonic luminescence. This method may enable the preparation of new types of high-efficiency perovskite materials with suppressed anion interdiffusion for prospective optoelectronic devices.

-Cholesteric Liquid Crystal-Based Encryption Labels. Lingling Shui (水玲玲), Ben L. Feringa, Jiawen Chen (陈家文), and coworkers report a novel strategy to create encryption labels using cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) microdroplets doped with molecular motors. The photo-triggered unidirectional rotation of the motor induces an opposite helical orientation of the superstructure in CLC microdroplets which results in changes in both the structural color and the selective reflection of circularly polarized light. Moreover, the tailor-made labels exhibit highly selective addressability of dual-level information, showing potential in anti-counterfeiting and data encryption.

-Targeted Protein Degradation. Targeted Protein Degradation (TPD) is an emerging tool for degrading proteins of interest, which has potential for use in cancer therapies. However, the present TPD technologies must engage a proteolysis-specific actuator to initiate degradation of targeted proteins in the proteasome or lysosome. Zhen Zou (邹振), Erhu Xiong (熊二虎), and coworkers develop an artificial tractor that can induce endocytosis-mediated protein depletion without hijacking a proteolysis-specific actuator. Their strategy expands the utility of TPD and paves the way for TPD-based medicine.

-Hydrogel Electrode. To address the contact problem at the electrode–skin interface for surface electromyography (sEMG) signal acquisition, Fengyu Li (李风煜) and coworkers develop an interfacial gel electrode patch, which consists of a polyvinyl alcohol-based hydrogel with a tunable hydrogen bond network. The hydrogel achieves skin-like elastic modulus, suitable adhesion, and high conductivity for sEMG signal monitoring. Furthermore, the gel electrode patch can be used to accurately assess muscle strength and recognize seven gestures by using an artificial neural network algorithm.

-Single Molecular Switches. Electrical switching of a single-molecule junction provides a practical module to perform sophisticated operations in electronic devices. However, designing an all-electrically-driven molecular switch is a great challenge. Dahui Qu (曲大辉), Hongxiang Li (李洪祥), and coworkers show that the single-molecule junctions of isoindigo-molecules display bias voltage-driven switching characteristics. These switches are realtime, reversible, and nondestructive under low bias voltages.

-Polymer Semiconductors. Polymer semiconductors are an important component of charge-transport layers in organic field-effect transistors, which show great potential in realizing low-cost, large-area, lightweight, next-generation electronic devices, such as wearable electronics, flexible displays, radio frequency identification tags, and intelligent sensors. Weifeng Zhang (张卫锋), Gui Yu (于贵), and coworkers report the preparation and field-effect transistor characteristics of polymer semiconductors based on isoindigo structures. Their work highlights that heteroatom structural engineering on ethenylene-bridged bisisoindigos is a useful approach in constructing high-performance n-type polymer semiconductors.

-Broad-Spectrum Antivirals. Sandra Chiu (邱香果), Jiaming Lan (蓝佳明), Aiguo Hu (胡爱国), and coworkers report a novel antiviral strategy to deactivate coronavirus by employing hyperanion-grafted enediynes. The core enediyne generates reactive radical species that cause significant damage to viral proteins, while the hyperanion groups ensure negligible cytotoxicity. The hyperanion-grafted enediynes exhibit antiviral activity against four kinds of human coronaviruses down to nanomolar concentrations and with a selectivity index of up to 20,000.

-Photoswitchable Molecular Recognition. Lei You (尤磊) and coworkers design a series of dithienylethene-containing acylhydrazone compounds for photoswitchable binding of metal ions. Based on the light-induced reversible structural changes of the binding pocket, cation binding can be turned on and off. Furthermore, an acylhydrazone polymer is constructed, which exhibits the selective capture and photoinduced release of Hg2+.

-Liquid-Like Surface for Biomedical Devices. The capture of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood samples could greatly enhance monitoring of cancer progression. However, the nonspecific adhesion of proteins and white blood cells (WBC) on the capture surface affect the clinical detection of CTCs. Shuli Wang (王树立), Chaoyong Yang (杨朝勇), Xu Hou (侯旭), and coworkers present a surface design that consists of grafting of liquid-like polymer chains with antibody modifications. By integrating the liquid-like surface with a patterned structure, high-efficiency and high-purity capture of CTCs is achieved on a microfluidic chip, while nonspecific WBC adsorption is significantly decreased.

-Circularly Polarized Luminescence. Metal-free materials with multicolor tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are attractive because of their potential applications in information storage and encryption. Xiang Ma (马骧) and coworkers design two enantiomers composed of chiral dialkyl glutamides and an achiral vibration-induced emission moiety which can switch on CPL after a simple gelation process. Applications in multiple information storage and encryption are highly anticipated.
